OpenODB from Hewlett-Packard
Object-Oriented Bibliography
Legends: ot object technology (in general)
otc object terms and concepts
oad object analysis and/or design
odb object databases
op object programming (mostly C++)
Grady Booch, Object-Oriented Design With Applications (otc, oad, op),
The Benjamin/Cummings Publishing Company, 1991. Source of
Booch notation; the Rose tool from Rational supports this
notation; Booch recently drafted extensions (mainly for C++)
and clarifications of his notation; the notation is in the
public domain.
Alan W. Brown, Object-Oriented Databases: Applications in Software
Engineering (odb), McGraw-Hill Book Company (UK) Limited,
1991. Includes an extensive bibliography on odb technology
and a discussion of the Iris prototype for OpenODB.
R.G.G. Cattell, Object Data Management: Object-Oriented and Extended
Relational Database Systems (otc, odb), Addison-Wesley
Publishing Company, Inc., 1991. Recent book that discusses
approaches to object-oriented DBMSs.
Peter Coad and Edward Yourdon, Object-Oriented Analysis (Second
Edition) (oad), Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1990. One of the
earliest object analysis methodologies; their most recent
book, Object-Oriented Design, has received mixed reviews.
Herb Edelstein, "Relational vs. Object-Oriented" (odb),
DBMS, 1991 November, pp.68-79.
The article discusses the current and future problems and
directions of relational and object database management
systems.
David W. Embley, Barry D. Kurtz, and Scott N. Woodfield, Object-
Oriented Systems Analysis: A Model Driven Approach (oad),
Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1992. A very recent book that documents
HP's OSA methodology.
Setrag Khoshafian and Razmik Abnous, Object Orientation: Concepts,
Languages, Databases, User Interfaces (ot), John Wiley &
Songs, Inc., 1990. Contains a chapter on odb.
Won Kim, Introduction to Object-Oriented Databases (odb),
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 1990.
Comprehensive introduction to odb concepts, implementations,
and future directions.
Won Kim, "Object-oriented database systems: strengths and weaknesses"
(odb), JOOP, 1991 July/August, pp.21-29. Discusses the
current state of odb data models and technology.
Wong Kim and Frederick H. Lochovsky, Object-Oriented Concepts,
Databases, and Applications (otc, odb), Addison-Wesley
Publishing Company, 1989. Collection of articles on object
technology; has a section on odb.
George Lakoff, Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things: What Categories
Reveal about the Mind (oad), The University of Chicago Press,
1987. Discusses how people categorize things; very
applicable to object discovery and invention during oad.
Bertrand Meyer, Object-oriented Software Construction (otc, op),
Prentice Hall International (UK) Ltd., 1988.
Although it documents the author's object language called
Eiffel, it also has an excellent overview of object
technology.
James Rumbaugh, Michael Blaha, Willaim Premerlani, Frederick Eddy, and
William Lorensen, Object-Oriented Modeling and Design (oad),
Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1991. Source of Rumbaugh notation which
was adopted by Versant; Versant is introducing a tool called
OMTool for this notation.
Sally Shlaer and Stephen J. Mellor, Object-Oriented Systems Analysis:
Modeling the World in Data (oad), Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1988.
A primary work on object analysis that is not dependent on
object software; targets real time systems; their most recent
book is Object Lifecycles: Modeling the World in States.
David A. Taylor, Object-Oriented Information Systems: Planning and
Implementation, (otc) John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1992.
Very readable book on how to adopt oo software engineering.
David A. Taylor, Object-Oriented Technology: A Manager's Guide (ot,
otc), Addison-Wesley, 1991. A very understandable, high
level introduction to ot with an emphasis on concepts,
terminology, and software engineering; introduction for
anyone.
Ann L. Winblad, Samuel D. Edwards, and David R. King, Object-Oriented
Software (otc, ot, oad, odb), Addison-Wesley Publishing
Company, Inc., 1990. Covers the state of object technology;
separate chapter on odb.
Rebecca Wirfs-Brock, Brian Wilkerson, and Lauren Weiner, Designing
Object-Oriented Software (oad), Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1990.
Along with Booch and Rumbaugh, one of the main oad
methodologies.
